XYRON ™

What is XYRON™?

XYRON™ is a modified PPE (modified polyphenylene ether or mPPE) resin product.

Modified PPE resins are polymer alloys formed by compounding PPE resins with other types of resin.

PPE resins are engineering plastics featuring excellent heat resistance, flame retardance, electrical properties,

and dimensional stability, with low water absorption and low specific gravity. PPE resins are amorphous

thermoplastic resins.

Asahi Kasei uses 2,6-xylenol as a raw material to produce PPE, and then to polymer alloys and compounds

with other resins to yield an extensive lineup of material grades. For each type of alloy, we offer various

grades to meet a diverse range of customer needs

XYRON™ Critical Attributes

Linear and non-crystalline, thermoplastic polyphenylene oxide (PPO), also called Polyphenylene ether (PPE), is considered one of the most important engineering plastics due to its exceptional chemical resistance, strength and resistance to heat distortion at high temperatures.

Notable attributes of our mPPE polymer engineering resins include:

  • High resistance to alkalis and acids.
  • Low specific gravity and excellent impact strength.
  • Excellent electrical properties.
  • Superior processability grades.
  • Outstanding range of heat resistance (80°C to 220°C).
  • Low mold shrinkage, excellent dimensional stability.
  • Reinforced grades for structural applications.
  • Use of flame retardants that are Halogen-free (V-0 through HB).
  • Grades with excellent hot-water resistance, low-water absorption and hydrolytic stability.

Modified Polyphenylene Ether Chemical Compatibility

Modified polyphenylene ether resin combines moldability and chemical resistance of crystalline resin with high-temperature rigidity and dimensional stability of amorphous resin. As a result, the compound can be used to create stable products in multiple environments.

Modified polyphenylene ether (mPPE) enables smaller wall thickness design, excellent dielectric properties, and potentially lowers overall weight. Xyron™ can be found in the medical, robotics, appliance and automotive industries.

Common uses include components in copiers and printers, electrical devices like circuit breakers and connectors, water softeners and vending machines.

Modified polyphenylene ether suits a range of applications, including use in:

  • Electrical outlet/switchs
  • Junction boxes
  • Motorcycle fairings
  • Nozzles
  • Fuse box components
  • Tractor hoods
  • Connectors for solar/PV
  • Medical devices
  • Battery cases
  • Relay blocks
